Life gives a second chance for most of the humans out living in this era of Corona. For many, it has succumbed their life economically, financially, emotionally but majorly the whole ecosystem has mellowed down its normalcy. For many of us the upcoming years will be hard to tackle with our financial conditions despite the pandemic, but chances of reviving back is possible.
Life seems unfair to this Irular community ( Tribal Families) who are inhabitants of Kancheepuram district for more than 30 decades. Irulas are one among the six primitive tribal groups of TamilNadu who are inhabitants of the northern districts of Tamil Nadu, a state in north-eastern India. Located not far from the city of Madras, they live in a tropical area subject to monsoon rains. The name Irular is derived from the Tamil word “Irul‟ meaning dark which refers to their skin nature. The name Irular means "people of darkness." This could refer to their dark-coloured skin or to the fact that all important events traditionally took place in the darkness of night.
Traditionally, the main occupation of the Irulas has been snake, rat-catching and honey collection. They also work as labourers (coolies) in the fields of the landlords during the sowing and harvesting seasons or in the rice mills. Fishing and cattle farm is also a major occupation. Rats destroy a quarter of the grain grown on Tamil Nadu-area farms annually. To combat this pest, Irular men use a traditional earthen pot fumigation method.
The original occupation of these people was rat and snake catching. Since the abolishing of snake catching by the Indian Government, the community had to abandon their migratory lifestyle and make their living among the suspicious mainstream society. The community has settled down in the outer edge of various villages, trying to make their living in as daily labourer in the fields, bonded labour in rice mills. Since, they do not have education and relevant livelihood skills.
When everyone is busy battling life with corona crisis. Survival becomes tough to these community people. In a notion to uplift the life of Irular community these NGOs come forward with an initiative called DHANAM—A day-long celebration with the people of Irular community
